Wedding Photography at Oxbow Regional Park

A forest wedding on the Sandy River, east of Portland.

Oxbow Regional Park sits on the Sandy River near Gresham, about half an hour east of Portland. Ambient Flare photographed a wedding here — a loud, colourful, entirely un-traditional one — and the pictures below are all from that day. If you are getting married at Oxbow and want to know what it actually photographs like, this is the honest answer.

What it is like to photograph here

Everything below is drawn from the photographs on this page rather than from a brochure.

It is a forest ceremony, and the trees do the work
The ceremony space sits under tall Douglas firs with the canopy closed overhead. In these photographs, taken in midsummer, there is no hard sunlight anywhere on the wedding party — the canopy is diffusing all of it. That is unusual and genuinely useful: a midsummer afternoon outdoors is normally the hardest light of the year to photograph people in.
The undergrowth is part of the picture
Ferns, moss and heavy green fill the background in most frames. It reads as deep forest rather than a manicured lawn, and it flatters colour — the pinks and reds in this wedding party sit against it well.
The reception shelter is covered and lights well
The reception in these photographs is under a wooden picnic shelter, strung with lights and bunting, with picnic tables underneath. Being roofed means the reception has a defined space and a warm light source once the day starts to go.
There is open grass for the rest of it
Away from the shelter there is open ground that caught low, warm light later in the day — the dancing and the loose portraits in this set were made there.
Paths are paved and parking is close
A paved path runs through the ceremony area, and the parking area is close enough that guests were gathering at its edge between the ceremony and the reception.

It is a Metro park, not a Portland Parks one
Oxbow Regional Park is run by Metro, the regional government, so it is not part of the Portland Parks & Recreation wedding reservation system that most Portland venue guides point you at. Reservations and current fees go through Metro. The park office is 503-663-4708.
Where it is
3010 SE Oxbow Parkway, Gresham — roughly half an hour east of central Portland, on the Sandy River. It is a thousand acres of river, forest and ridge, so allow more time than the drive suggests to get people from the gate to the ceremony spot.
The park closes at 8 p.m. in summer, and that shapes the whole day
From 1 May to 14 September the park is open 6.30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and the closing time steps earlier from mid-September onward. This is the single biggest planning constraint here. A summer reception has a hard stop, and it means the warm, low light you want for couple portraits has to be used well before the end of the evening rather than saved for last. Worth building the timeline backwards from the gate time.
Picnic shelters can be reserved
The reception in these photographs is under one of the park’s covered picnic shelters. Shelters and picnic areas are reservable through Metro, and having a roofed space matters here — it is a rain plan and a light source in one.
Closed for repairs from September 2026
Metro has said the park will close for several months from 8 September 2026 to replace its water system. If you are planning a date around that, check with Metro first.
